The Mock Turtle is a DC reading series featuring writers from the University of Maryland MFA program. The reading series is independent from UMD, allowing both readers and the audience to enjoy the series in a casual setting. We have three fiction readers and three poetry readers at each event, and we read on one Saturday per month during the academic year at Wonderland Bar. The Mock Turtle welcomes anyone and everyone to come listen.
Any bar can fill your glass on a Saturday night, but we will fill your ears!
We at the Mock Turtle believe that readings should be engaging, thought-provoking, and also entertaining. This is a celebration of our work as much as it is a reading, and our peer introductions of each reader speak to that goal in raucous and sometimes raunchy fashion. We ask that the audience listen respectfully, but we do encourage clapping, cat calls, guffaws, and foot stamping (where appropriate – we trust your judgment). So come for the reading and stay for the after-party, courtesy of Wonderland Bar and local DJs.
